Wiang Tha Kan
Wiang Tha Kan is an ancient city dated back to the Hariphunchai period; however, nowadays only historic remains can be found scattering around.
Wiang Tha Kan is located in an administrative area of Ban Tha Kan, Ban Klang subdistrict, San Pa Tong district. It is on Highway No. 108 (Chiang Mai – Hod route) just 34 kilometers short of Chiang Mai. To get there by car from downtown Chiang Mai, drive along Highway No. 108 (Chiang Mai –Hod route) via San Pa Tong district. When reaching the intersection, make a left turn near Ban Thung Siew to access Ban Tha Kan. Keep going for the distance of 2 kilometers. Alternatively, you can get there by bus. Get on a Rong Wua – Tha Wang Phrao bus at Chiang Mai city wall.
Back to the glorious era of Hariphunchai Kingdom, Wiang Tha Kan was regarded as one of the significant places. Archeologists presume that the city was built in the 13th Buddhist Century during the reign of King Arthitayarat, the ruler and founder of Hariphunchai. The city declined and was conquered by King Mangrai who later established the kingdom of Chiang Mai.
At present, the debris of historic sites is deserted inside Wat Tha Kan school and Wat Ton Kok school. These includes pagodas, brick foundation of assembly hall, laterite stone scrap blocks, sandstone and clay Buddha images, countless of votive tablets,  brown-coated porcelain cremation urns, chinawares from the Yuan Dynasty (1280-1368). In addition, there are the ruins of temples, stupas, brick blocks and clay tiles.
At Wiang Tha Kan, shuttle bus services and skillful tour guides are provided.
Wiang Tha Kan is one of the cultural and tourist attractions of Chiang Mai. It allows visitors to experience and get to know more about this ancient city. Wiang Tha Kun as a historic site is worth a visit from both local and international tourists.
